Emmy-winning actress Jessica Lange stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” today, Oct. 22 to discuss her new role on “American Horror Story: Asylum.”
DeGeneres described Lange’s new character, a nun named Sister Jude, as “creepy” and had no problem telling the vibrant leading lady, “I’m scared of you.”
One episode in, everyone is wondering why Sister Jude is as stern and obviously twisted as she is. This week’s Halloween-themed episode “Tricks and Treats” is supposed to reveal a key to her past. The episode synopsis on the AHS website simply reads: “An Exorcist is summoned to Briarcliff to help save a troubled farm boy. Sister Jude’s darkest secret is revealed.”
Lange alluded to some of Sister Jude’s past in responding to Ellen, saying: “She’s not that far out there. What’s fun is that there’s a backstory to her, which is about 180 degrees the other direction. So everything that you see about Sister Jude is a result of this kind of crazy, wild, drunken loose life that she lived before.”
Here’s what we know about Sister Jude so far:
- She keeps strict order among the inmates at the asylum and is feared by them and the staff.
- She believes in corporal punishment and has a collection of whips.
- She considers homosexuality to be immoral and plans to “cure” a helpless Lana (Sarah Paulson) of her “problem.”
- She thinks Kit (Evan Peters) is Bloody Face and is repulsed by his marriage to a black woman.
- She’s embroiled in a power play with Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) and is concerned about the nature of his experiments and the “missing” patients.
- She doesn’t like Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) calling herself stupid.
- She has sexual fantasies about Monsignor Timothy Howard (Joseph Fiennes).
One thing is certain: Nothing is creepier than a demonic child (think Damian/Antichrist "Omen!")
Is he really demon-possessed? Does he know incriminating things about Sister Jude? And, will she take desperate measures to keep him quiet?
Just two more days until we hopefully get some answers…
“American Horror Story: Asylum” airs Wednesdays at 10 PM EST on FX Network.
